slip stitch (sl st)

stuff you’ll need:

100% merino wool, double knitting weight
1 skein of green
1 skein of red
hook size g/4mm
tapestry needle

gauge

17 stitches and 14 rows = 4” (10cm) in half double crochet with size G/6 (4.0mm) hook.

instructions

thumb:  in green
rnd 1:  make an adjustable ring.  ch 1(counts as 1st hdc), 4 hdcs into ring; join with sl st to beginning hdc.   5 hdcs total.

rnd 2:ch 1 (counts as 1st hdc), work 1 hdc into same st, work 2 hdc into ea sc around; join with sl st to beginning ch.  10 hdcs total.

rnds 3 – 6:  *ch 1 (counts as 1st hdc), work 1 hdc in ea st around.  continue working in a spiral until you have a total of 6 rounds.

finish off, leaving a long tail in order to attach the thumb to the mitten.

mitten:  in red
rnd 1:  make an adjustable ring.  ch 1(counts as 1st hdc), 5 hdcs into ring; join with sl st to beginning ch.   6 hdcs total.

rnd 2: ch 1 (counts as 1st hdc), work 1 hdc into same st, work 2 hdcs into ea st around; join with sl st to beginning ch.  12 hdcs total.

rnd 3: ch 1 (counts as 1st hdc), work 1 hdc into same st, *1 hdc into next st, work 2 hdcs into next st*, repeat from * to * 5 more times; 1 hdc in next st; join with sl st to beginning ch. 18 hdcs total.

rnd 4:  ch 1 (counts as 1st hdc), work 1 hdc into same st, *work 1 hdc into next 2 sts, work 2 hdcs in next stitch*; repeat from * to * around to beginning ch; join with sl st to beginning ch.  24 hdcs total.

rnd 5:  ch 1 (counts as 1st hdc), work 1 hdc in ea st around.  when you get to the beginning chain, hdc in ch.  24 hdcs total.

rnds 6-12:  *continuing to work in a spiral, hdc in ea st around.*  Repeat from * to * until you have a total of 12 rounds.  do not fasten off.

rnd 13: attach thumb:  with red, hdc into the last st you made on the thumb.  working around the outside of the thumb, leaving three sts unfinished on the inside, hdc in the next 6 sts.  skip 3 sts on the red mitten.  hdc in 4th st.  hdc in the next 19 sts.  28 hdcs total.

rnd 14:  work hdc dec.  hdc in next 5 sts.  hdc dec. hdc in ea st around.  26 hdcs total.

rnds 15 – 18:  Work hdc in ea st around.

cuff:  in green
row 1:  leaving a long tail to attach cuff to mitten, chain 8.

rows 2:  ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea chain across.  7 scs total. 

rows 3-24: Repeat row 2.  25 rows total.

fasten off. 

with shorter tail, sew cuff closed so that it forms a circle.

with longer tail, sew cuff to bottom of mitten.

finish off.

make another one, using opposite colors.
